Members of the WHS Marine Biology Club recently presented at a national conference on flatfish biology in Westbrook, CT. Students Aidan Bowers, Lukas Koutsoukos, Josh Zheng, Shawn Gregory and Nandan Raman presented the research they conducted this summer on the winter flounder population in Norwalk Harbor before scientists who came from as far as Alaska and from organizations such as the Smithsonian Institute and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. These five students were supported by other members of the Marine Biology club in preparation of the report.
The study is part of a 30-year effort spearheaded by the Earthplace Nature Center in Westport. WHS Science Instructional Leader Jim Lucey began the collaboration with Earthplace 30 years ago, and it is now one of the longest running such studies available, with a huge collection of data.
