Wilton High School Freeplay:A Night of Improv Comedy was an incredible success over it's three show run last weekend. The dedicated cast have been rehearsing three times a week for the last three months to ensure that the show hit comedy gold.
Rehearsals include practicing the games and scenes that were performed in the show, and also doing exercises to build basic improv skills. A lot of rehearsals are also geared towards ensemble building and developing relationships with fellow cast members.
Back stage before the show, cast members could be found doing warm-ups in the choir room together to "be in each other's energy" as teacher Ms. Delude explained. Exercises help the improvisors to capture and feed on their nervous and excited energy
The cast are quick to regognise Ms. Delude as fundamental to the incredible success of the program over the last six years. Delude facilitates an environment of vulnerability and trust, which leads to close friendships within the cast. Improv is not just about performing, it leads to growth in many areas for the students, to be a successful improviser performers need to build on their skills of empathy, confidence, and vulnerability.
'There's nothing like the feeling of being onstage and having a successful scene' says improvisor Ava Kaplan 'It's an adrenaline rush that is unlike anything else, and I'll forever remember all of my best moments on stage'
To anyone considering auditioning Kaplan recalled Ms. Deludes advice: Feel the fear and do it anyways. 'Improv is often terrifying. Being that vulnerable is never easy. But without the risk, there is no reward, and the experience of being a member of freeplay and learning improv is the greatest thing Wilton High School has brought me'
