On Wednesday, Aug. 29, teachers and staff at Wilton Public Schools returned to their first day back at work after summer break. As is tradition in Wilton the first day is a faculty and staff convocation at the Clune Center. It proved to be an inspiring, educational and poignant day.
Two of the many highlights were a visit by custodian Juan Carvajal who is currently battling glioblastoma, the High School A Capella singers led the audience in a beautiful rendition 'Stand By Me' while his family and he thanked everyone. Juan Carvajal received an award from Superintendent Smith for his courage and always giving of himself to the Wilton Public Schools community - the standing heartfelt ovation was befitting of such a warm expression of gratitude. An award was also presented by Superintendent Smith to Janet Nobles in recognition of going above and beyond her commitment to Wilton Public Schools and for leadership that affect the entire community.
Dr. Marc Brackett of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence was the keynote speaker, presenting information on his research on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning. The school district is deepening it's commitment to providing social and emotional support for students.
The convocation's spirit this year is a focus on caring for self and others - ensuring that all students feel "supported, appreciated, and valued".
